about

Writing “newly fallen snow” was one of those experiences that songwriters talk about when they describe writing as a cathartic process. The day Alix and I wrote this song, I was feeling horrible. It was my freshman year in college and one of my friends had experienced sexual violence. After we wrote it, I could still feel an anvil of pain weighing me down.

The remarkable thing about songs is that they continue to give; as time went on, this song continued to provide me with comfort. The only thing it didn’t do was provide change. There were more instances of sexual violence, and it made me so angry. I kept coming back to this song. I never thought I’d release it, but if there was any chance that it could provide anyone with any comfort, I wanted to share it with the world in a meaningful way. April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and a time to think about how we can repair the cracks in our societal framework.

From the release of this song to our donations to charity to the music video (that will be coming out after the song), I hope we can create a change. We can spread awareness about sexual assault by breaking the silence around such a horrible act of violence and preventing any future violence. I hope we can make this world a better place using art and our voices. They are our most powerful tools.

lyrics

I can hold a grudge, but these days they’re
getting heavy
The less you say, the more that you upset me
Time is a chain on the collar that contains me
Attached to the leash that you gave me

I should’ve known
You were looking for a place to roam and
I was newly fallen snow
Cold and alone
For you to run your hands all over
Leave and no one knows

I’m the joke that never lands
I’ll fall victim to your hands
The punch line no one ever understands
And then it all goes quiet
Cause they think silence will fight it
I play along, pretend that I don't mind it

I should’ve known
You were looking for a place to roam and
I was newly fallen snow
Cold and alone
For you to run your hands all over
Leave and no one knows

Come to my place and erase me.
